Murcia

About an hour's drive away is the city of Murcia, the capital of the province of Murcia. The city was founded in the year 831 AD.

Over time, it has become an important city with impressive buildings. However, in the 17th century, Murcia was struck by a devastating earthquake, causing many significant buildings to collapse. Nevertheless, beautiful structures have been preserved, such as the City Hall, the Romea Theatre, and the Real Casino with its Moorish-style interior.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria is the icon of the city. Its construction took a long time, starting with the laying of the first stone in 1388 and completion in 1467. Work on the cathedral continued until the 18th century, resulting in various architectural styles. The cathedral is located on Hernández Amores Square, and its tower, standing at 100 metres tall, is a typical example of Tuscan architecture.

The Museo Ramón Gaya is entirely dedicated to the Spanish painter born in Murcia. The museum is located near Plaza de Santa Catalina, a beautiful square featuring one of the many street art projects in Murcia.

Adjacent to this square is Plaza de las Flores, another pleasant place to enjoy a terrace.

If you are interested in more history about the city and the region of Murcia, the Museo de la Ciudad, the city museum of Murcia, is worth a visit.
